Is the real problem for all these failues in medical devices, commercial equipment (including cars) really the fault of the manufacturer or is it the regulators forcing the use of lead free solder for all products. Note: There is a problem with using tin only solder in producing all our products and using the latest processing chips. Tin Wiskers occurs with tin only soldering – could cause shorts anytime if it starts to grow. Latest processors are more susceptible to single event upsets.

I can hardly believe that there are many refurbushed Android phones. This type of phone is couple of months old!
It might be possible that infection comes from preformated card but I doubt that this is refurbished phone.
Whole case needs more investigation before final answer…

This is very misleading posting. The phone was not infected, it was a flash card formatted for windows was infected. That was most likely refurbished phone that came from the user using infected Windows PC.
Reading of this post make someone to believe that Android is responsible for people negledgence.

Note that apps submitted for Windows Mobile have a relatively short turnaround time for MS signature, implying a perfunctory examination. The Apple App Store has over 140K apps for the iPhone. In both cases, it seems that unless something can be found by automated checks it will not be found.

Unless the automated testing is 100% effective, it seems reasonable to take steps to hold the malware submitter accountable, but it’s not clear how that can be done expeditiously without making the process highly burdensome therefore restricting consumer choice.

Maybe there is a business case for security accreditation of apps.

In the meantime, as Jeremy indicated a little common sense goes a long way.

I don't think the Apple mentality of limiting the interfaces is going to serve them well with this product; this mentality will leave the door open for the Windows and/or the Google people to develop a product that has is more usable and there is no reason that competitors products can't be just as user friendly. I was reading at netbookspoint.com that Apple's application store is going to help this product over those developed by others, but once again there is no reason why others can't develop something similar and offer software developers a better return.

By the way, my CTO reminds me that something as simple NanoSRTP using a pre-shared key (PSK) would have stopped this attack, and would have had minimal impact on the performance of the system, and be simple to use/integrate.

The cryptographic algorithms are designed to be secure even id the attacker intercepts the data stream. The radiated power and the radiated RF spectra contain significantly less information, than the intercepted data stream. Thus, the hazard isn’t realistic.

This is more than realistic. The phenomenon of tempest is well known, and capacitive and inductive filtering does not ‘cancel’ any signal away. It reduces the level at which any signal can be transmitted or carried. Just because a signal has a lower power does not stop someone with sensitive enough equipment recovering that signal.

This is not realistic. There is no way that an embedded secret key could be determined by monitoring power consumption. No CPU will draw power in corellation to the key data and the capacitive and inductive filtering to create a stable power supply would cancel any signal anyway.

No one ‘forces’ you to use GPL’ed code.
I think the GPL license is rightly fair, it is sinply a way to force you to be correct. If someone invested in producing some free code (avoiding any consideration on why should he do that, but money isn’t everything even in this world), it is at least correct to avoid closing that code or a derived one in an application and selling it as your own.

If they were to read the GPL, before using the code, they would not be in this mess.
GPL does have some requirements and as a matter of fact they are very strict. GPL does not mean public domain. Try reading the GPL.
